Zamzar and Media Convert, Tools Like No Other

Just when I thought that the Internet has nothing really new to offer, here comes two websites which made me squirm on my seat with anticipation and excitement. Zamzar and Media Convert, two of the sites so far that I’ve seen which offers an online file conversion tool for free.

Yes, for free and I mean really free, none of those free trial stuff or free if you register kind of thing. Now, between the two I personally like Zamzar over Media Convert. Zamzar has a far simpler and nicer design with friendlier user interface to boot.

Don’t get me wrong, both Zamzar and Media Convert are able to perform tasks like converting PDF documents to Word, Jpeg to Bitmap photos files, MPEG to AVI files, audio MP3 to WMA formats, MP4 for your iPod and much more. But I seem to like the simplicity of Zamzar. It’s either that or those two iguanas in the homepage.

When you convert a file in Zamzar, you need to wait a couple of minutes before the file is processed. Afterwards, the link where you could pick up the converted file will be sent via email within 24 hours or much quicker (or longer) depending on the time the site’s admins have on their hands. On this point, Media Convert glows brightly over Zamzar.

At Media Convert, you can wait while the file is being converted. When the task has been completed, Media Convert will immediately post a url link where the converted file is waiting to be downloaded. Conversion time depends on the size of the file. However, Zamzar is able to convert files that have a maximum size of 100 MB while Media Convert can only manage files that are 50MB or less.
