BuyYourFriendADrink, a great concept in electronic money.

Now this is the kind of web service I love seeing. Simple, practical and real. BuyYourFriendADrink is one of these and its appeal isn't just because of the alcoholic content.

The concept is real simple. Users can buy anybody a drink at the bar without being there by simply paying for the drink online and letting the recipient claim it at a bar of his choice. The giver fills up a form at the BuyYouFriendADrink site and pays online (plus a $0.99 fee). The recipient then gets a gift code or voucher to be shown at the bar to claim the drink.

The service is as is said also practical because it leaves the recipient the option of which bar he'll claim the drink. The giver actually just pays for the drink but cannot decide which bar the recipient could claim it from. So it's like a dedit card for drinks.

The best part of BuyYourFriendADrink however is its real world necessity that has been overlooked for quite some time. I mean everyone drinks and this is the only time I've seen this kind of transaction for this product. In the words of the founder Steven Cohn:

"BuyYourFriendADrink.com was founded as a way to celebrate with others when you can’t be there in person. Whether you want to celebrate a special event or congratulate a colleague on a job well done, BuyYourFriendADrink.com is an easy way of giving a gift. Because hey…who doesn’t like it when someone “buys them a round”? "…You can't get any more real than that.

All in all, I think the concept of this service must be applied in other areas like department stores or petrol stations or even utilities. So to the maker of BuyYourFriendADrink, cheers!
