Palm Stores to close by the end of January

PDA and mobile maker Palm has been having a rough year and it is not quite over yet.  After many delays with the release of the then much awaited Palm OS II (and still delayed), Palm has lost public support and appeal.  Also with the release of new mobile handsets and cheap UMPC’s, Palm’s mobile and handheld sales have slumped.

At the TreoCentral forums, "sources" say that Palm will be closing all their stores except for the airport-based retail outlets.  These reports were confirmed by community members who asked their Palm retailers who said that they will indeed be shutting down by the end of the month.

Palm has also shown signs of trouble when they laid off employees last December.

It may be possible that Palm itself may comletely shut down and call it quits.  Apparently the time when they were the leading handheld producer has long gone with the emergence of smart phones and UMPC’s which outsize, outclass and outperform Palm products.
