You tube mobile

YouTube today released their mobile version of their website.  Actually, they already did make their site for mobile last year but that was for a limited number of videos.  This time however, Youtube optimized their mobile site for most of their content.  The mobile version is available at m.youtube.com for 3G and/or WiFi capable  phones.

There is also a downloadable application for  mobiles on the new mobile version of YouTube where users can use YouTube like on an iPhone.  Though this application may no longer be needed since most of the videos and features can be used through the mobile phone’s browser.

Users can also upload videos directly from the mobile phone to YouTube with the new portal.

The optimized site however is not yet complete.  It will work on a 3G/WiFi handset but willuse the handset’s media player to stream the video.  YouTube is still working on a Java app that will allow users to directly stream video from their mobile browsers.

This release of YouTube is a huge step for mobile video.  Now that the largest video sharing site has gone mobile, it may be hard for other mobile video apps to compete with the readily available YouTube.  Furthermore, mobile Youtube may ruin the many Youtubers’ productivity levels.
