DivX Closes Down Stage6

Stage6 is a online video sharing site for high quality videos. Owned and operated by DivX Inc., the site has enjoyed a lot of attention since it launched in October 2006. Many upload and download videos on Stage6 for its unlimited playback feature as well as the high quality encoding DivX provides. However, among the millions of videos uploaded, many are copyright infringements, complete movies, series and video clips that are becoming hard to manage and take down.

The official reason for the closure of Stage6 can be found on their blog and in a nutshell here’s the punchline, “So why are we shutting the service down? Well, the short answer is that the continued operation of Stage6 is a very expensive enterprise that requires an enormous amount of attention and resources that we are not in a position to continue to provide.”

Basically, it’s the pirates’ fault. The uploading of illegal content has taken a toll on the operations and administration of Stage6. However, it’s a shame that Stage6 is coming down, I’ve always watched great movies on their platform and without it, well, online video experience will never be the same.

Stage6 will shut down on February 28. Upload feature has already been taken down.
