Well, they’ve done it.  Nobody doubted it anyway although there were some who thought that the servers might conk out.  Still, after a rough start, Mozilla reached their target, making Firefox 3 the record holder for the most downloaded software in 24 hours.

Mozilla did invite everybody they could telling them that we could all set a world record on June 17 by downloading the latest release version of Firefox.  They said that they wanted to reach 5 million downloads by the end of 24 hours.

The 5 million mark was broken a couple of hours before the deadline at 12pm ET.  Two hours to the deadline, 7.3 million have downloaded the browser and by the time the tallying stopped, the count was at about 7.5-8 million.

The Mozilla blog reports that they have exceeded the Firefox 2 record of 1.6 million downloads just 5 hours after the release of FF3.

Congratulations Firefox Guys!
