Chrysler will be bringing mobile internet into their cars this coming 2009. They are calling this in-car internet connectivity UConnect.

The UConnect will be available on most of Chrysler’s 2009 models including Chrysler 300, Aspen, PT Cruiser, Sebring and Town & Country; Dodge Avenger, Grand Caravan, Caliber, Challenger, Charger, Dakota, Durango, Journey, Nitro, and Ram; Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee, Commander, Compass, Liberty and Patriot.

Of course this feature won’t come standard but on a hefty add on the standard retail price. Moreover, those who will avail of the UConnect enabled vehicles will still have to pay monthly subscriptions to telecommunications companies since the UConnect is a 3G-WiFi connection.

On the bright side, the 3G-WiFi feature instantly makes the car a hotspot running on 600-800 kbps downloads and 200kbps uploads.

Also, the UConnect service will also not only be limited to providing in-car internet but there will also be other features under the Uconnect umbrella including, uconnect tunes (with 30GB storage for music), uconnect phone (connects you bluetooth phone and syncs automatically), uconnect gps, and uconnect studios (back seat TV).

Chrysler’s Press Release explains the rationale for UConnect and explains its different features.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 26 /PRNewswire/ — Today’s consumers are passionate about staying in touch and want to be connected no matter where they are — home, work, school or vehicle. To focus on the experience and connect customers to the things that matter the most, Chrysler LLC will now bundle innovative consumer technologies under one umbrella name – "uconnect." The function of the feature is directly in the name – uconnect phone, uconnect tunes, uconnect gps, uconnect studios and uconnect web.

"We set out to connect customers to the things that matter most to them," said Deborah Meyer, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer – Chrysler LLC. "The role for ‘uconnect’ in the 2009 model year places the focus on the customer experience and how the features will make their life easier."
