gmail down

Gmail was down.  Way down.

In what has become known as the Great Gmail Outage of 2008, Gmail this afternoon was down for a couple of hours and the world was waiting.

Gmail was introduced a couple of years ago as an alternative to Yahoomail, Hotmail and other locally hosted email services.  In fact Google encouraged companies to migrate their email systems to Google offering them lots of storage and a reliable email platform.

Who wouldn’t migrate to Google? Besides it is Google, the largest most reliable company on the web.

So there it was, Google has become the choice email service provider for consumers and some enterprise.  However, there was a problem, could Google handle its rapid growth?  All that’s been answered this afternoon.

A couple of weeks ago, there were already some minor outages of Gmail.  However, today was major.  Sometime this afternoon, Gmail went down worldwide. The reason has not been disclosed and Google said they were sorry.

Does this prove that the cloud is not reliable as we hoped it to be?  Whatever it was, a lot of people are sure glad that no data was lost.

According to the Gmail blog, the problem has been identified and fixed.  Oh yeah, and they’re sorry.

"We’ve identified the source of this issue and fixed it. In addition, as with all issues that affect Gmail and our other services, we’re conducting a full review of what went wrong and moving quickly to update our internal systems and procedures accordingly."
