AT&T’s mobile data services went offline earlier this morning affecting smartphone users.  Reports of an outage started before dawn and ran  up to about midday.  iPhone users as well as other smartphone users were unable to make any internet connection on the AT&T wireless network.  EDGE and HSDPA were both out but voice calls and text messaging were unaffected.   Moreover, mobile email on the Blackberry also remained unaffected by the outage.

Consumers affected by the outage expressed their frustrations on online forums as well as Apple and AT&T’s  complaint rooms (also online).

Most of the North Eastern states were affected,Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois and Missouri.  However AT&T has not confirmed if these locations were isolated.

An AT&T representative issued a statement but has not disclose the details of the outage.   "There was a routing issue affecting some wireless data use in the Northeast region. AT&T technicians determined the cause and restored service at 11:56 a.m. EDT. Voice calling, text messaging and BlackBerry email were unaffected."
