Twitter recently made some cleaning on their system to get rid of spam accounts. This was according to a recent entry to their Twitter.status site. The people at Twitter became aware that the displayed following and follower counts on some member profiles seem to be inconsistent and inaccurate. They tried to institute some changes so that the following and follower counts on the Twitter sidebar would be similar to the counts found on their separate pages.

Twitter also warned that the actions may lead to some profiles experiencing a certain follower counts in some people. Those with large followings are said to be affected by this. So if you recently experienced that your follower count has recently dropped for some reason, it was because of the recent cleaning up made by Twitter. They assured that legitimate followings would not be affected by the clean up operation, only the spam accounts as well as the data inconsistencies would be affected.

It should not be a cause of concern for most people and it would even somehow improve the service by getting rid of the spam that has recently invaded Twitter. It would be quite easy to build up more followers with many still getting into the Twitter ride.
