Finnish cellphone giant Nokia is giving Apple something to think about. Nokia is suing the iPhone maker with a suit over 10 patents related to mobile phone technology. It seems that Apple has not agreed to a licensing deal with Nokia over the use of the patents. And for this Nokia is seeking an injunction over the sales of iPhones and for unspecified damages.

Nokia said that it has already reached a licensing agreement with 40 other companies using the said patents. It seems that Apple is not yet cooperating despite going through negotiations for some time now. Nokia may already have reached the end of the rope and sued Apple as a last option.

Nokia says that it has spent billions of dollars trying to develop and research technologies that has become the current standard in mobile phones today. Technologies include those that are being used in GSM, 3G and Wi-Fi network phones. It is also generally understood among device manufacturers that those who are owners of intellectual properties that are established standards have to be duly recognized. This includes paying licensing fees to the owner of the patented technology being used. But it seems that Apple don’t seem to recognize the said patents which led Nokia to sue.

So far, Apple has not commented on the issue concerning the Nokia suit. The drama may just be starting. But it seems that each side is just waiting out on what the other would do next. The best option would probably be reaching a settlement. It’s that or there is going to be years of litigation ahead for the two companies.
