Facebook Adds Relationship Statuses for LGBT Community

Facebook introduces two new relationship statuses that cater to members of the lesbian, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered (LGBT) community. Status options now include “In a domestic partnership” and “In a civil union,” both of which reflect the relationships of gay couples in US states where such legal actions are allowed.

These statuses join the current roster that includes Single, In a relationship, Engaged, Married, It’s complicated, In an open relationship, Widowed, Separated, and Divorced.

The new options are now available in the United States and will roll out to other countries soon. However, these statuses will not appear in countries where same-sex marriages are already legal.

The move has been praised and criticized. While it is welcomed by LGBT rights groups, they say it also reflects how some states display its “separate and unequal” policies prohibiting gay marriage. These groups are trying to erase the distinction between civil union/ domestic partnership and marriage.

“When millions of Facebook users see these relationship status options, they gain a greater understanding of the legal inequalities faced by loving and committed same-sex couples in so many states today,” wrote Jarrett Barrios, president of Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), in an e-mail to Mashable.

“Being able to see same-sex couples in civil unions and domestic partnerships who celebrate their relationships no differently than married couples will serve as another reminder that these couples still lack the same legal recognition and protections associated with marriage. Facebook’s noteworthy move also highlights the vast majority of same-sex couples living in states where there are no legal protections whatsoever.”
