After over a year of early releases and updates, Microsoft is geared to release the Internet Explorer 9 next week.

Microsoft’s IE engineering head Dean Hachamovitch (pictured) announced that IE9 will be available for download beginning March 14 at 9:00 p.m. Pacific Time (GMT -8). The release comes barely a year after the first preview of IE9 at the MIX conference in April 2010.

Since then, Internet Explorer has released eight platform previews, one Beta, one Release Candidate, and a final version of IE9.

According to Microsoft, Internet Explorer 9 is “the fully hardware-accelerated browser,” using the GPU for all graphics and text in webpages. The browser is also aimed at becoming the world’s fastest and enabling to work with HTML5 technologies. It also features tracking protection and a better user interface.

“The design of IE9’s frame puts the user’s focus on the site, not the browser, with fewer distractions,” Hachamovitch said in a blog post. “IE9 allows sites to shine.”
