ICANN Approves .xxx Domain

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a California-based nonprofit organization that oversees Internet addresses, has approved the use of the .xxx domain for websites over the weekend. The decision comes after years of debate and deliberations within the organization.

The new domain, which will ba handled by Florida-based ICM Registry, would give rise to future websites such as www.porn.xxx or www.sex.xxx. The company assures that the .xxx domain would be the Internet’s most trusted place for adult entertainment, as it will monitor the websites carrying the new domain to ensure that they do not contain spam, viruses, or any other illegal behavior. It also claims that it will use a portion of the registration fees for charitable use to promote free speech and fight child pornography.

As expected, the approval of .xxx has caused fierce debate from different governments and even from the adult entertainment industry. Government representatives from the United States and some foreign nations say the domain would only encourage oppressive regimes to block .xxx regardless of the content.

Pornography companies, meanwhile, fear that .xxx would not only become vulnerable to government censorship, but would also force them to pay thousands of dollars in registration fees to buy multiple .xxx addresses to protect their brands from cybersquatters. Such practice results to different websites whose addresses are closely similar to prominent sites.

ICANN is also expected to approve a new batch of domains next year, including .gay and .news.
