Old Woman Cuts Off Internet of Two Countries

Well, this news is for the books: The Internet services of Armenia and Georgia were cut off for several hours after a 75-year old Georgian woman cut the main service cable in an effort to steal copper.

The woman was scavenging for scrap metal when she saw the primary fiber-optic cable that runs through the two countries. Using a shovel, she apparently hacked the wire until it severed.

The damage was reportedly very severe that 90% of Internet users in Armenia lost access for almost 12 hours. It has also affected neighboring Georgia and some areas of Azerbaijan.

The local authorities arrested the woman just outside of Georgian capital Tblisi where she was charged for damaging property, in which she could face up to three years in prison if convicted. She was subsequently released, taking into account her old age. However, the woman still faces investigation and a possible trial.

Although the cable is typically protected, officials said that heavy rain may have made the area more exposed.

Scavenging for copper is a common means to earn money in Georgia, which used to be part of the Soviet Union.
