Nintendo has recently announced that it is dropping the price of its Wii gaming console to US$150 starting May 15. The new price comes in a package that will include a free Mario Kart game along with the console purchase. Not only that, the package will also include the Wii Wheel accessory that can be used to play Mario Kart.

This move was something that some avid gamers have been waiting for and also expect. The price drop of the Nintendo Wii from its previous US$169 price bundle. It seems to usually happen for gaming consoles that may be announcing a new successor. In fact, Nintendo has somehow said that it plans to come up with the new Wii console sometime next year. Nintendo hopes to revitalize its market by attracting new buyers of its current console that may also lead to interest on the new console that may be coming next year.

Whether Nintendo aims to keep gamers anticipate its upcoming Wii console, it may need to do a lot more into reviving its market that somehow has gone lukewarm. It was only sometime ago that all the hype in the gaming market belongs to the Nintendo Wii and its then new motion controller. The demand then for the console was at its height. It seems that its leadership in the market may extend for a long, long time. But this was not to be.

At its current state, the Nintendo Wii has not been able to maintain its momentum after several years reigning at the top of the gaming console market. In fact, its appeal might be waning with other gaming consoles like the Sony Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaining more and more attention with their own launch of motion control sensors. Nintendo might need to work harder in order to maintain staying at the top. It might need to offer something new for its new Wii console next year in order to keep that level of excitement and anticipation up. Offering better and more exciting Wii games may also do as well.
