Toyota Plans To Build Electric SUV’s In Canada

There seems to be renewed interest showed by various car makers in making electric vehicles. The rising cost of oil in the market may have fueled this interest to manufacture such electric cars. But so far, the current electric car models available in the market can’t compete yet with current gas-powered cars in terms of cost and performance. But the gap between them is slowly getting closer.

One of the more active of the global car makers to have started making electric vehicles is the Japanese car maker Toyota. This company is currently planning to build an electric version of its RAV4 model in a plant in Canada. It may help offer an electric model for a vehicle segment that offers some big appeal among consumers. As an SUV, the electric RAV4 may help set the pace for what may be the benchmark for EV sales for the industry, if ever it becomes a successful model.

In order to create the electric version of the RAV4, Toyota is teaming up with electric car maker Tesla. Toyota will be paying Tesla around $100 million in order to supply their RAV4 EV with its electric power train. This includes the battery, motor, gearbox as well as power electronics that will be assembled with the RAV4 EV. The power trains will be assembled and made at the Tesla factory located at Palo Alto in California.

The Toyota facility that will be assembling the RAV4 EV will be located at Ontario. Canada has been a big supporter of the EV industry. It has been known to team up with the US in order to help the industry keep on track. Being the venue for the manufacture of Toyota’s next generation of SUV’s using clean technology may be a big move for the country in its push for the progress of the EV industry. Toyota says that the pricing and distribution of the RAV4 EV will be announced later.
