A StatCounter graph has now shown that Windows 7 OS has taken over its fellow XP to become the most popular operating system in the world, roughly two years since Microsoft’s latest OS was introduced.

This milestone, according to StatCounter, happened on October 2011. The graph shows that Windows 7 has 40 percent share of the market compared to 38 percent of Windows XP. As for the Vista, the much-panned OS that followed XP, remains at around 11 percent. Rounding out the top five are Apple’s OS X and freeware Linux, which come in at 7 and 0.82 percent respectively. It is unclear whether the OS X in the chart covers all of Apple’s operating systems.
