NASA Confirms Milky Way’s Unavoidable Collision with Andromeda

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Hubble team has confirmed what they have long been suspected: that Milky Way, the galaxy where Earth is located, is destined to collide with neighboring Andromeda.

Before you run around the house declaring “the Mayans were right,” Hubble scientists report that this collision of titanic proportions will happen four billion years from now and will last for two billion years.

While scientists predict that Earth will remain unscathed throughout this process, thanks to the sheer amount of empty spaces between stars, our planet may lose the Sun as it flies out to some other part of the new system–that is, if by that time the sun remains alive.
