Facebook Makes @Facebook.com Email Address Default

You may not have noticed it on your Facebook profile, but the social networking site provides its users with a @facebook.com email address. Messages sent to this address is directed to your Facebook Message Inbox, but not everyone is using this feature. Now, Facebook has made these email addresses default in your profile, while your third-party email addresses becomes hidden regardless of previously selected privacy settings.

While the move aims to improve email address privacy, some quarters–like John Constine of TechCrunch–see it as a “self-serving attempt to increase usage of @facebook.com email addresses.”

If you still want the public (or at least your friends) see your personal email addresses while hiding your @facebook.com address, you can do so by following these instructions:

* On your Timeline, click “About.”
* At the “Contact Info” section, click “Edit.”
* You will notice that all your email addresses except for @facebook.com are hidden from Timeline. Change the settings according to your preference.
* Make sure to set whether to make your email addresses shown to the public or just your friends.
