After being criticized for its lack of diversity on its board, Facebook appointed its COO Sheryl Sandberg as its first female director.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged Sandberg as “my partner in running Facebook,” adding that her “understanding of our mission and long-term opportunity, and her experience both at Facebook and on public company boards makes her a natural fit” on Facebook’s board of directors.

There have been rumors that the social networking company has been seeking new directors, including at least one woman, who can make its board more inclusive. A majority of Facebook’s over 1 billion users are women, thus a female director would benefit both Facebook and its members.

Different groups from California State Teachers’ Retirement System and Face It Campaign have clamored Facebook to add a women and minorities to its board.
