Microsoft announced last Monday that it has officially acquired enterprise social network Yammer to the tune of $1.2 billion.

Yammer–including its executives and employees–will become part of Microsoft Office division, led by Kurt DelBene. Team Yammer will continue to report to their current CEO David Sacks.

“The acquisition of Yammer underscores our commitment to deliver technology that businesses need and people love,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. “Yammer adds a best-in-class enterprise social networking service to Microsoft’s growing portfolio of complementary cloud services.”

Microsoft announced that Yammer will continue as a standalone service, while the social network will be integrated in several Microsoft services including SharePoint, Office 365, Microsoft Dynamics, and Skype.

Yammer works like Facebook, except that it caters to businesses. Corporate teams can join specific groups and keep each other updated with “what they are working on.”
