Yahoo! Picks Google Exec as New CEO; Reveals She Is Pregnant

Struggling Internet pioneer Yahoo! searched far and wide to find its newest CEO and has found it in one of its fiercest rivals in the person of Google’s erstwhile executive Marissa Mayer. She has taken over the reins since Tuesday, making her one of the few women CEOs in the male-dominated tech industry.

Mayer, 37, will also take on a new role–being a mother. She has confirmed the pregnancy on her Twitter account early this week, calling it “another piece of good news.” She is expecting the baby–a boy–in October.

Mayer has disclosed her pregnancy to a Yahoo search committee in late June when they were looking for a replacement for Scott Thompson, who resigned after being accused of padding his credentials. She said no one on the committee expressed any concern about hiring a pregnant CEO, according to a report on Fortune.

She said she would take “just a few weeks” of maternity leave. “I like to stay in the rhythm of things,” she told Fortune.

In consideration to Mayer’s pregnancy, the Yahoo! board of directors agreed to conduct its September meeting in the company’s base in Sunnyvale, California, rather than New York.

Mayer was Google’s first female engineer, who is credited with developing Google’s user-friendly interfaces used in its search engine, Gmail, Google Maps, and Google News.
