A huge number of Twitter users reported Thursday that they receive e-mails informing them that their passwords have been reset, fueling concerns that the social networking service was hacked.

In response, Twitter said that as it conducted its routine check for compromised accounts, the company “unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts” than necessary.

“We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused,” Twitter posted on its status blog.
