Microblogging service Sina Weibo, Twitter’s staunch rival from China, has reported something amazing for their third quarter results: the social networking website has over 400 million registered users, most of whom are from the People’s Republic of China.

This makes Sina Weibo a dominant player in China’s “weibo” (microblogging) market, but whether it is the leader would depend on whom you ask. Its closest competitior, Tencent Weibo, has reported an audience of 469 million as of second quarter of 2012.

Sina also reported third quarter earnings of $152.4 million in revenue, along with $9.9 million in net income, a 17-percent growth from last year.

Despite all these encouraging news, Sina Weibo – along with other weibo services – are trying to transition to mobile and, more importantly, how to make money off it. The service has seen increasing mobile traffic, with 72 percent of Sina Weibo users accessing it from either mobile or a combination of mobile and PC.

The company is set to launched a new mobile-focused payment system this quarter, as well as a promoted feed feature (similar to what we see on Twitter) that allows SMEs and users self-support with in-feed advertisements.
