It is not always nice to hear about something closing down. But if a certain idea just doesn’t work, then might as well let go of it. In the case of major animation and film studio Disney, this idea is its online streaming service. The company just recently announced that it is closing down its Disney Movies Online streaming site.

According to a post on the website, the company will be closing the online streaming site on December 31st of this year. Purchases, upgrades and Magic Code entries are no longer available on the site. But subscribers can still stream their existing movies until the end of the year.

For those who would like to refund for movies or for upgrades made on the site, they need to send an email by February 28 of next year in order to qualify for it. Any more requests after that will no longer be entertained.

While the idea of an online streaming site like Disney Movies Online may look good on paper, there are some things that may have contributed to its demise. One of them is the lack of any other choice in terms of movies. Offering only movies coming from a single film studio may not be that appealing for many people. If only the streaming service move to establish partnerships with the other film studios, then it might have been a totally different story. And the fact that most people may not have heard about the online streaming site may be another factor why the idea did not take off.

But whatever may be the reason, it might not totally be something that Disney may simply just let go. The company might be developing a better way of offering their library of movies online for people. It might be doing it in a different way that may be more effective than its initial foray into the online streaming service.
