Iran’s Supreme Leader Joins Facebook, Instagram

While the Islamic Republic of Iran is looking for ways to make their Internet “halal,” such as launching their own take on YouTube, the country’s supreme leader has apparently embraced the online creations of the “evil” West.

Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has put up a Facebook page of his own, which was officially announced on the leader’s Twitter account. The Facebook page has 17,000 “Likes” as of this posting, even though the social networking site is banned in Iran.

The Ayatollah’s Facebook page comes after his office joined Instagram back in July. Over there, he has over 1,200 followers and posted 18 photos.

What is more impressive are the quality of the comments; there are not a lot of negative comments being hurled against the supreme leader compared to Facebook posts of Western leaders. It could either because the Ayatollah’s social media accounts are heavily policed or the netizens would rather not mess with Iran.
