American Express Launches Pay-by-Twitter Service

American Express has launched a new way for their US-based customers to pay stuff: on Twitter.

The Amex Sync payment system lets AMEX card holders post a specific hashtag on Twitter to confirm payments from their accounts. The pay-though-Twitter scheme is now applicable in purchasing products from Amazon, Sony, and Microsoft–all are discounted to boot. It also offers savings to customers who tweet sponsored hashtags, such as #AmexCelticsOffer. The full list of promoted hashtags is available on its Twitter account, under the Favorites section.

American Express customers wanting to avail of this service should first link their card to their own Twitter account using the Amex app. Then, they can check out the firm’s Twitter page for discounts and special offers. If they find an offer they want to purchase, simply send a tweet using the special hashtag to start the process. A confirmation message from the @AmexSync account would be sent to them, containing another hashtag that they should tweet (not retweet or reply) within 15 minutes to verify the purchase.

American Express users are warned that products may sell out and that they can only purchase one of each item.

This is not the first time American Express partnered with social media. It recently partnered-up with location-based networking app Foursquare on a voucher-free discount scheme in the US and UK.

A spokesperson for AMEX did not reveal whether this service would be available to other countries.
